Nils Petter Aaland

Nils Petter Aaland is an art photographer, photographer and writer known for his love of "street photography", especially close-ups of people showing their emotions. He has built up an extensive photo database through his many travels to selected locations, mainly in Asia and both eastern and western parts of Europe. He is attracted to what is unexpected, different and intense, and likes to seek out the "adventure" in photography. Examples of such experiences can be the arctic light or the desert light.

In his exhibitions at DAIDDA, Aaland presents both photographs and original works where he has used a special technique called phototransfer. This is a method that uses chemistry to transfer a photo from one material to another. For example, he can transfer a photo to watercolor art photo paper using chemical processes. After the process is complete, he removes the copy paper and the visible result is the photo now "glued" to the watercolor paper. What remains on the watercolor paper is only the surface coating or film from the laser print, which has then been "transformed" into the paper.

Aaland also explores the possibility of transferring his photos to other materials such as glass, metal, wood, ceramics and the like. He offers workshops where he shares his knowledge and teaches this special technique. Overall, Nils Petter Aaland is an art photographer who uses his travels and experiences to create poignant "street photos" that convey people's emotions. He also explores unique techniques such as phototransfer to create original works that can be displayed on different materials.
