Chamonix Mont Blanc, France, 2019

Aiguille du Midi. There really is no mountain that has influenced or shaped me more than this peak, not to mention the ski lift, which is two minutes from the apartment I bought in Chamonix in 2004.

The snow patch on the right in the picture is a small part of the 1200-meter high wall, and this very spot was first visited by the same George L. Mallroy who five years later, in 1924, crashed into the summit of Mount Everest and disappeared among the clouds high on the mountain.

The route Mallory followed became a legendary test-piece when the three skiers Daniel Chauchefoin, Yves Détry and Anselme Baud took down the 55-60 degree steep line. I myself thought that riding it would be the worst thing I could do on a pair of boards. Instead, the experience showed what was possible, it didn’t result in “peak performance”, but opened up a new mountain world full of exciting challenges.
