Chamonix Mont Blanc, France, 2019
"No matter how sophisticated you may be, a large granite mountain cannot be denied - it speaks in silence to the very core of your being." -Ansel Adams
I could have chosen to title my motifs with what you see in the picture. PETIT DRU, would have been a good name for this motif - in fact I made exactly that choice for another motif in the series, but that's another story, which I'll get to. back to when the time is right.
I wanted to find titles that tell their own little story. Like this one, because Petit Dru is more than a name, it is a magnet for the eye and for the imagination. This peak is so easily visible from the valley floor, and one of the main reasons for the construction of the train line up to Montenvers, where tourists have flocked for 110 years. Petit Dru is in many ways the centerpiece of Chamonix's mountains, and especially of the Aiguille Verte massif.
You are moved, as Ansel says, when you see this kilometer-high granite column with its mighty steep walls, and the gigantic snow patch called “La Niche.” For many, the strong sight is enough, but climbers go deep into themselves and ask themselves if they have what it takes to climb the mountain, via the classic north face, or the fresh west face.
We skiers like to say that if it's white, you can ski. “But there, you can't ski there?” ask many who live a lowland life, pointing to steep snow and ice, glued high on the mountain sides. Well, Bruno Gouvey emphasized that you can be so wrong - do a Google search on the movie Dru Express for five minutes of passion / madness, in the middle of the north face of Petit Dru.
