Kristiane Seglem

Kristiane Seglem explores the paradoxical and turbulent nature of the human mind. With spray cans, acrylic paint and oil pastels, she creates a fusion of urban street art and neo-expressionism and gives a playful but tense expression to inner conflicts.
Seglem's recurring metaphor "Little Monster Syndrome" captures the interplay of internal dynamics by personifying one's own mental struggles. These "little monsters" – menacing and charming, destructive and misunderstood – represent the clash and harmony of the chaotic states of the human mental being. giving shape to his inner chaos, Seglem offers a broader commentary on the emotional landscapes we all navigate in de-threatening our monsters and make them more relatable, manageable and humane.
She gives us a mirror and self-portrait through her works, and invites us into an ongoing journey of self-discovery in the contrast and coexistence of different states of mind. She depicts how thoughts and imagination can be both comforting, destructive and all-consuming - an escape and at the same time a source of suffering in the form of torture. This is how she puts mental health in focus on canvas. The works seem deeply personal, at times almost borderline psychotic, where the subconscious is exposed on the canvas. Inspired by Seneca's famous quote, "We suffer more often in imagination than in reality"
"Welcome to the (Monster) Party!" is a series that invites you to confront and get to know the misunderstood or suppressed parts of the self. Seglem hopes her art will inspire you to reflect on your own oxymoronic inner landscape and the charming but vulnerable little monsters that live there - those you fear, those who fear you, and those who yearn to be understood and seen.
