Carl Fredrik Sundt-Hansen
Carl Sundt-Hansen was a Norwegian painter who belonged to the last generation of Norwegian artists who were influenced by the Düsseldorf School. He was more cool and unsentimental in his depiction of folk life than Adolph Tidemand, but still had a contemporary brushwork and dark tonality that was typical of late Romanticism.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1859 to 1860, and then with Benjamin Vautier in Düsseldorf from 1861. Between 1866 and 1869 he stayed in Paris. In 1871 he moved to Stockholm and from 1882 lived in Copenhagen before settling in Valle in Setesdal in the 1890s. Sundt-Hansen's paintings often had a serious, gloomy or dramatic content, as for example in the paintings "In the sheriff's arrest" (1868, replica 1875 in the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo) and "After the fight" (1882, National Museum of Art , architecture and design). From 1890, the large composition "Burial on board" (National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design) is an example of his work.
