Bridal journey in Hardanger
Bridal journey in Hardanger
About the original:
This motif, which so strongly expresses 19th-century ideals of beauty, has been cultivated as an "icon" by generations of Norwegians. The painting has been transferred to the theater stage both as a living tableau and ballet, and the motif has been accompanied by poems and music.
Through graphic reproductions, Brudeferd i Hardanger became widespread, and due to the special popularity of the motif, the artists have executed the painting in several versions. Adolph Tidemand was the first Norwegian artist to settle in Düsseldorf. He gave up his ambition to become a painter of history in order to become a painter of folk life. But Tidemand gives a new dignity to the farmers, and the poet Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson is said to have said that without Tidemand's paintings he would not have been able to write his peasant stories.
Landscape painter Hans Gude, who was just over ten years younger than Tidemand, presents here as a 23-year-old a magnificent depiction of Norwegian nature. Although it is not a direct reproduction of a particular landscape, the composition is composed of accurate observations of nature from different places in his home country. Tidemand and Gude have done several paintings together, where all the motifs show people out in a boat.
